Hey there! I’m Sarah
Hey there! My name is Sarah Scott and I am passionate about teaching adults.
Believe it or not, teaching adults is different than teaching children. We all learn differently, some learn better when they listen to someone, others absorb information better when they read it and still others need hands on practice to feel comfortable with a new skill. Almost all want some kind of feedback on their progress.
I want to state this up front for you. I believe that courses are an amazing revenue generator for your online business, but only if they are done well!
For many course creators the thought is about how to quickly they can get a course up and running so they can generate revenue rather than trying to create the best course for their learners.
Because of programs like Teachable, Thinkific, Screen-cast-omatic and other available tools it has become easier than ever to offer courses through your business. This has in turn created an increase in the availability of online courses. Additionally individuals are discovering that they don’t need to go to a college or university to learn a new skill so they are more open to learning from business owners.
But not all courses are not all created equal. And there are some great salesmen out there. And what is sold is not always what was promised.
So while individuals are willing to learn from (and pay for courses by) other business owners, they have become skeptical of the quality of the courses they are paying for.
And rightfully so, I have purchased courses that oversold and under delivered on their promises due to poor course design, outdated theories, a lack of actionable learning (in other words I couldn’t apply what I was taught) or simply a course that didn’t match the pitch.
For example a Facebook Side-Hustle course I took sold that this would be a course that would teach you how to run Facebook Ads for small business. I assumed that meant that they would show me all kinds of strategies using all that Facebook has to offer. Once I started taking the course I discovered that they only taught one strategy for local businesses and they would breeze past 90% of the features saying “We don’t use those” without any explanation why that was. In addition, the Facebook interface they were showing was out of date and they spent more time teaching (and trying to sell me) ClickFunnels than Facebook Ads, and every other sentence mentioned how this was great in 2018 (when I was taking the course in 2020)!!! Additionally they uploaded all of their videos from YouTube into their course platform – the video size didn’t fit the screen width of the platform so I had to keep moving my screen to see everything – not user friendly. And my final straw with this group is when I requested a refund for the sales pitch not meeting expectations they showed me a super over complicated refund policy that basically never allowed for a refund.
Similarly there was a course I took that was sold as a way to help individuals with the dream of becoming an online business owner find their ideal online business model and get started. The instructor was great and the content was ok…but she kept referring to everyone as if they were military spouses. Which I am not, so that was a bit of a turn off for me.
One final example I would like to share with you is a wedding planning course I also took (have I mentioned that I am as addicted to learning as I am to creating?) The instructor was amazing and her content was great…but every lesson was an hour or more long and it was just her talking behind lots of PowerPoint slides. There was no way to step away and restart the lessons, and honestly just staring at PowerPoint slides that had all of the information on them just wasn’t that engaging. I also felt that it was missing some key components to making it a GREAT course. The course was designed to help up and coming wedding planners start their own wedding planning business but there was never any discussion about marketing or getting your first clients. So at the end of the day new wedding planners might know how to plan a wedding…but not how to start their business (with clients).
And just as there are many courses that don’t meet the mark there are ones that do. And those course are the ones that have raving fans and cost $1,500 – $5,000 or more to join.
The philosophy that says you can put together a course based on content you already have is poor advice. In today’s market, business’ that want to add course to their revenue stream must be so much more savvy, in order to make that strong impression and get students to actually achieve success.
And this is where I come in.
With 13 years of experience with one of the Big 5 Consulting firms, I was solely responsible for the design and development of all training related to one of our healthcare products. What made my role unique was that I wasn’t responsible for developing in-house training but instead focused on training clients and using that knowledge as a sales tool.
I designed everything from in-person classroom training and one-on-one customized training to large webinars and online learning courses. I was sought after for my expertise within the firm and often consulted on other learning projects as new products started to emerge that we were selling directly to clients.
When I had my son in 2018 I decided to leave the corporate world for something I created for myself. I invested in more classes trying to find my “calling” than I would care to admit but each and every time I would find myself critiquing the course and how it could be made better for the learner.
That’s when it hit me! Why not take my knowledge of developing courses and share it with other course creators like you! I want to show you the tools and techniques that I have used time and time again to create courses that are professional and wow your audience.
I will teach you how to use tools that are used by professional learning companies to create experiences that are interactive and compliment your learners style.
Learning should be fun (and profitable!) and I am so glad you are thinking about working with me to make amazing courses for your business!
